Grand River Alpaca Farm began in March 1998 with the start of one bred female and two young males. Close to 12 years later, our herd has now grown to 50 alpacas. We have developed a national and international breeding program with our bloodlines of Dark Shaddow and Velocity being overseas in the UK as well as throughout the United States. Having international breeders recognizing our breeding program and wanting our genetics was just another milestone for us in our success as high quality breeders of black and gray. Our breeding plan was to breed for high quality black and gray huacaya alpacas with the goal to become one of the best breeders in the US. Well, our dream has become a reality with good planning, wise breeding decisions, determination and hard work. In 1999, we purchased a young true black male who would put us on the map to success. His name is Dark Shaddow and he has become the TOP black herdsire in the US and perhaps the world. He is by far the most prepotent black herdsire there is. Dark Shaddow himself has won several championships and was named 2006 Dark Reserve Herdsire of the Year. His first son born, Grand River Amstel, is carrying on his legacy and was named 2009 Extreme Dark Herdsire of the Year. With over 50 championship awards won by Dark Shaddow offspring as well as having the highest selling gray daughter in history, selling for a world record $96K at the 2007 AOBA auction, he has set the standards for consistently producing high quality black and gray alpacas.
Grand River Alpaca Farm is dedicated to providing the best care for our animals and keeping up to date on new procedures and husbandry care. We are hands on breeders and do just about everything ourself and are happy to pass this knowledge onto our clients. We are dedicated to our customers by helping them in all aspects of the alpaca business from husbandry care to knowledge on how to market their alpacas, as well as choosing breeding stock that will work best for their breeding goals and improve on their breeding program.
